Middlesex University

Middlesex University

Middlesex University’s history can be traced back to 1878, but it did not officially become Middlesex University until 1992 when it was granted university status. Middlesex University was one of the first universities to head overseas and offer British higher education worldwide. This resulted in Middlesex receiving the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2003 and 2011. Her Majesty the Queen also honoured Middlesex with three Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education in 1996, 1998, and 2000 for its Work Based Learning programme, Education Technology, and Flood Hazard Research Centre, respectively.

In 2009, Middlesex received high regard from the Quality Assurance Agency who positively noted the university’s academic standard management, learning opportunities, and student progression and achievement plans. The QAA also praised Middlesex for its development of its new Dubai campus. Middlesex ranked tenth amongst post-1992 universities in the 2008 RAE. Of the research submitted for classification, 77 per cent received an ‘internationally recognised’ or ‘internationally excellent’ rating.

Middlesex University has two campuses in North London – Hendon and a specialist health campus in Archway – and campuses in Dubai and Mauritius. All four campuses boast a collective student body of over 40,000 students. The London campuses account for 22,000 of the 40,000 total. Overseas students make up 30 per cent of Middlesex University’s student body, including those studying in London and at the overseas campuses. A majority of the overseas students in London are from China or Poland.

City of Middlesex

Middlesex was formerly a county in Southeast England established by the Middle Saxons in the 8th century. Middlesex became a part of Greater London in 1965. As part of Greater London, those in Middlesex have access to all London has to offer via transport, including the arts, diverse and historical culture, bars and pubs, fine dining, an established nightlife, shopping, sports, and classic architecture including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Parliament, the River Thames, and numerous cathedrals and abbeys amongst other notable London landmarks.
