What Is an Aeronautical Engineering Degree?
Aeronautical Engineering is the field of engineering devoted to the design, development and building of aircraft. Aeronautical engineers build new technologies as well as ensuring the safety of existing ones. As well as airplanes and helicopters, aeronautical engineering is a discipline which covers military technology such as missiles and other airborne weaponry. It is also closely linked with aerospace engineering: satellites and rockets. There is a lot of overlap between these two disciplines.
What will I study?
You will study the history of aviation and airplane design. Making use of state-of-the-art simulation suites and practical, hands-on lessons, you will learn the mechanics of flight. You will study innovative approaches in aircraft construction and cover important topics such as aviation safety, sustainability and efficiency. The majority of courses offer important work experience with a year in industry between the second and third years.
See more details:
Year one includes modules taken by all engineering students: mechanics, materials, dynamics and mathematics for engineering. Students are introduced to simulation packages and are taught vital CAD skills. At the end of the first year, students will undertake a design project using the skills that they have learned.
The first half of the second year is devoted to the study of manufacturing processes and methods. The second half of the year comprises two modules: aeronautical design and fluid and thermal systems. During this year, students continue to use simulation suites to gain practical knowledge. Field trips to industry and internationally renowned research facilities will help you to ground your knowledge in practical experience.
In the final year, you will learn propulsion, avionics, flight controls and aircraft design. You will undertake a personal project which will involve spending time working in the industry. Students will undertake modules in project management, sustainability and aviation law.
