Deakin University and the Melbourne Institute of Business and Technology (MIBT) have enjoyed a successful partnership since MIBT’s foundation in 1996. Through this partnership many successful MIBT graduates have been provided with a pathway that has enabled them to go on and complete a Deakin University degree.
MIBT is an excellent pathway into Year 2 of a Deakin University Bachelor degree. With MIBT, you’ll be studying on the Deakin University campus, but you’ll be in much smaller classes than you would in your first year in the mainstream university programs.
Over 90% of international students studying at MIBT successfully complete their studies and go straight into the second year of their Bachelor degree. This is a significantly higher percentage than for international students in Year 1 of a mainstream university program in Australia.
Deakin University
Deakin University was established in the 1970s as one of the new generation of Australian universities. Deakin combines a university’s traditional focus on excellent teaching and research with a desire to seek new ways of developing and delivering courses. Deakin has won several awards for its teaching and learning excellence – testament to its excellent facilities, flexible study options and courses which are informed by industry professionals.

MIBT Programs
With MIBT, you’ll be studying on the Deakin University campus, but you’ll be in much smaller classes than you would in your first year in the mainstream university programs. You’ll get the extra care and support you need to ensure you succeed in you studies in Australia.
MIBT offers a Certificate IV in University Foundation Studies course in the following streams: Business, Engineering, Health Sciences / Nursing, Information Technology, Mass Communication and Science. The Certificate course is equivalent to upper secondary school (Year 12) and other university foundation programs and is designed to prepare you for further study in the MIBT Diploma courses as well as providing relevant qualifications for employment purposes.
International students may be eligible to apply for entry into first year of selected Deakin University Bachelor degrees that MIBT Diploma courses do not articulate into, after successfully completing the Certificate IV in University Foundation Studies and meeting the specified entry requirements.
The MIBT Diploma is offered in association with Deakin University as an alternative pathway to undergraduate studies. The Diploma consists of Deakin’s first year degree units and moderated by Deakin academic staff thus ensuring the University’s high academic standards are maintained at all times.
These streams are offered:
- Diploma of Commerce
- Diploma of Computing
- Diploma of Engineering
- Diploma of Health Sciences
- Diploma of Management
- Diploma of Media and Communications
- Diploma of Science
The duration of the Diploma course is three trimesters (12 months). There is an option, however, to fast track the course and complete it in two trimesters (8 months). Eight units must be completed and passed to be awarded the Diploma. On successful completion of a Diploma you are eligible for entry into second year of a relevant Bachelor degree at Deakin University.

- MIBT Diploma – A$17,820-A$19,800 (total)
The cost of living depends on the students individual lifestyle. MIBT estimates that a single International student requires A$14,000-A$20,000 per year to live.
