AUT Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) prepares students to be competent and highly respected health professionals who have the ability to contribute to health improvement at local, national and global levels.
Graduates who then successfully undertake the Nursing Council of New Zealand’s State Examination gain registration as a comprehensive nurse.
This degree supports a multidisciplinary view of patient care and challenges students to go beyond traditional health and illness care to foster the growth of healthy and resilient communities. Teaching and learning happens in a supportive environment, with access to the latest facilities and high quality clinical placements in hospitals and communities throughout the Auckland region. There are 1300 hours allocated to clinical learning experiences over the three years.

WHAT THIS PROGRAMME COVERS
Year One
Students begin by studying basic human sciences, communication skills and the political and social aspects of the New Zealand health system.In the second semester, students advance their knowledge of human sciences and are introduced to nursing knowledge, nursing skills and health service delivery.
Year Two
Students learn to nurse individuals with acute physical illness, mental illness and those requiring rehabilitation from their illness. This is complemented by students gaining an understanding of the contextual factors that impact on an individual’s functioning, disability and rehabilitation. Assessment and communication skills develop while learning to care for individuals. Pathophysiology studies form the scientific basis for knowledge and understanding of acute illness and rehabilitation.
Year Three
Students prepare for the complexity of caring for individuals and their families in hospital and community settings. Students continue to build assessment and nursing skills and the human and biological sciences that inform sound clinical decision making and safe clinical practice.
