What Is an Financial Mathematics Degree?

Financial Mathematics graduates work in a wide range of careers within the finance industry. The course is designed to combine mathematics with business studies, accounting and economics in order to develop both mathematical and financial skills.

What will I study?

The majority of the course is spent on mathematics, including financial mathematics, mathematical modelling and pure, applied and statistical mathematics modules. You will also study through the business school, and take modules in business finance, economics and accounting.

Year one is an opportunity to study key mathematics topics such as calculus, mathematical analysis, numbers and vectors, probability and statistics, and financial mathematics. You will also take introductory courses in financial accounting, management accounting and economic theory.

The second year builds on the knowledge gained in the first year, exploring more in-depth units in accounting, statistics, economics and financial mathematics. You will also be permitted a free choice of optional modules which may include discrete mathematics, microeconomics, numerical analysis with computation, statistical methods and environmental statistics.

Approximately one third of your final year will be spent on banking and finance modules. Otherwise you will be able to pursue your specific interests through a wide range of optional units including applied economics, international trade, behavioural finance, auditing, international business finance, corporate governance and actuarial mathematics.
