What Is a Mechanical Engineering Degree?
Mechanical Engineering is a wide-ranging branch of engineering which is concerned with design, construction and use of machinery of all sizes and types. A degree in Mechanical Engineering will open doors across many different fields of work including product design, transportation and the military.
What do I study?
Mechanical Engineering degrees are broad and varied. Typically they will focus on mathematics and physics but will include subject specific modules such as aeronautical or automotive engineering. You will learn practical skills including CAD design as well as theory.

Mechanical Engineering degrees are usually offered as a three-year Bachelor’s degree, or a four-year Honors/Masters’ degree. Many institutions also offer a study-abroad year, or a year in industry.
Year one will cover a solid background in electronics, mechanics and design. You’ll cover the basics of CAD design and have the option to take specialist modules such as thermodynamics. Your work will include classroom-based study, field trips and lab work.
In year two you will cover design and further your knowledge of CAD. As well as specialist modules such as fluid mechanics and electromagnetics, you’ll learn practical skills including project management, ethics, law and finance which will prepare you for working in the field.
The third year will focus mainly upon a personal project of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to take elective modules. These might include ‘vehicle and engine technology’ or ‘sustainability and mechatronics’. If you choose to take a four-year Honors/Masters’ course, the final year will surround an in-depth study into an area of your choosing, supervised by an expert tutor.
