Mechanical engineers work with the machines. Whether they design and build smaller component parts or plant machinery that can be astronomical in size, mechanical engineers dream, and then build, these critical components. Salaries range from £20,000 to £55,000 or more after about 10 to 15 years in the field.
Automotive engineers build vehicles from concept and design all the way through to the production stage. This engineering science concerns itself with not only how the engine works, but also how to make the vehicle comfortable, economical and more environmentally-friendly. Automotive engineers earn £23,000 to £65,000, depending on their experience.
Aeronautical engineers design both civilian and military aircraft. Those engineers working in defence will also design and build missiles, weapons systems, satellites and space craft. The aeronautical industry is oftentimes under fire for safety concerns and its environmental impact. As such, aeronautical engineers must consider safety and the environment in their designs. Salaries range from £20,000 to £65,000 plus.
Mechanical Engineering Curriculum
Students will learn and utilise analytical skills combined with creativity to identify and present solutions to engineering problems. As with all engineering degrees, mathematics and physics will play a role in the student’s curriculum, as well as individual and team research and design projects, where the students will be required to tackle practical engineering problems and present viable solutions.
